Cumberland is a western gateway city and seat of Allegany County. The city has a population of approximately 20,859 and is located in the Ridge and Valley physiographic province of the Appalachian Mountains at the junction of the North Branch of the Potomac River and Wills Creek.

The Cumberland Fire Department - is a career department with 65 members consisting of one Fire Chief, one Administrative Officer, one Chief Deputy, one Fire Marshal, 3 Deputy Chiefs, 3 Captains, 9 Lieutenants, 18 Equipment Operators, and 28 Firefighters.
Personnel are cross-trained for both fire suppression and emergency medical services. The Cumberland Fire Department is currently staffed with 48 emergency medical technicians and 15 paramedics.
The department operates from three fire stations, six pumpers, one aerial tower, one rescue truck, one command unit and four advanced life support ambulances.
